Shaoxing Opera, also known as Yue Opera, originated in Sheng County, Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, in the early 20th century. It is a rapidly developing local opera with a short history in China. It was named "Yue Opera" because it has its origin in part of Yue State in the Spring and Autumn Period dating back about 2,000 years ago.

写古代浙江山阴县书生杨美卿与妻子周雅丽共守清贫，同居坟庄。多亏表兄刘文美常常接济，美卿才能赴京赶考。当美卿得中状元，慑于奸相张仁成，忘却了父仇家恨，贪恋荣华富贵，抛弃了结发糟糠，认贼作父，入赘张相府与仁成之女芸华完婚。雅丽千里寻夫到京城，谁料美卿狼心狗肺，忘恩负义，绞妻、逐叔、害友，丧尽天良。雅丽死里逃生，女扮男装，行医民间。国太病重，雅丽揭皇榜人宫，治愈太后凤恙，恩准宫诉申冤，揭露仁成叛国，状告美卿罪行，国太愤恨，对雅丽遭遇甚为同情，命皇上封她为定国夫人，钦赐龙凤剑，先斩后奏，下旨由雅丽亲自审讯。雅丽诛奸相仁成，将美卿斩首，芸华赦免。该剧可演六本至八本。1938年由林黛英首演于宁波天然舞台。
